" Tutor Amigos en Matemática" program
The "Tutor Amigos en Matemática" program is aimed at helping non-profit organizations, communities and schools meet their objective of providing academic support in Mathematics to Hispanic, English Language Learning (ELL) students.
Many Latino immigrants come to the United States with dreams of a better quality of life for themselves and their families. Once established they often send for children who like their parents, arrive with poor education and with little or no proficiency in English. English Language Learning (ELL) immigrant students run a high risk of academic failure. Many attend schools which for a variety of reasons fail to successfully transition them into the English-speaking classrooms. The result being that many ELL Latino students drop out of school or exit with poor academic skills that condemns them to a working underclass in American society.
Our goal is to intervene in this process.
Strong math skills are critical to the future of all students in today's global economy. This is especially true for ELL Latinos whose Math scores continue to lag other racial groups. Initially we are focusing on Math with the goal of expanding the range of subjects offered. By leveling the playing field and providing individualized, content-based, native language tutoring, Tutor Amigos aims to provide academic support for ELL Latinos who are the lowest achieving, fastest growing and fastest spreading minority group in America today.
